Build With AI for $0: How to Start Without Paying

You can learn to build with AI without paying for anything. The catch is that "free" means different things: a free chat window, a free allowance for programs to use a model, a trial that expires, and models you run on your own computer. Knowing which one you have keeps you from hitting a surprise limit or bill.

What "free" can mean

  • A free hosted chat or coding tool, with a limited allowance.
  • A free tier for programs to use a model (an API), with its own limits for each model.
  • A trial or promotional credit that runs out.
  • Access for a specific group, such as students, that not everyone qualifies for.
  • A downloadable model that runs on your own computer, using your own hardware.

A free interface can still call a paid service

The price of the editor, the model, and the hosting are separate. A free editor that asks for a billed API key has not made the model free. Before you start, find out which part costs money, if any.

Check before you build

Look at your own account, not a headline. Find out what you can use, how much of the allowance is left, whether billing is switched on, and what the data terms are. Don't add billing just to finish a starter exercise.

Use made-up data

Free plans can handle your content differently from paid ones, and the rules vary by product, region, and account. While you practice, use made-up or public information rather than anything private.

If you run out

Save your files, then wait for the allowance to reset or use another route you're allowed to use. Copying code between a chat window and an editor on your own computer still works, even when a coding tool isn't available.

Running a model on your own computer

Downloadable models are free to use but need real memory and storage. Check your hardware before you download a large one, because the file size is not the same as the memory it needs while running. A model that runs locally doesn't make the tools connected to it private.

What free doesn't cover

The starter exercises in the course need no new software subscription, purchased credits, or hardware. A real domain name, live hosting, and some services you add later do have their own costs, so plan for them separately when you launch.
